A Simple Valentine: On Radiance, Restraint, and Using What We Already Have

A Quiet Return to Simplicity

Every year, when Valentine’s Day approaches, I find myself reaching for elaborate ideas, layered textures, intricate details, and all the little flourishes that feel like my natural creative language. But this time, something in me wanted to slow down to see what might happen if I let simplicity take the lead.

Sometimes the most meaningful designs begin with restraint.”

So I gathered what I already had: recycled card stock, gold watercolour, my heart punch, and some cream card that had been waiting patiently in my stash. Like most crafters, I buy more supplies than I ever manage to use, so it was good to dip into my stash.

What emerged was a design that felt both quiet, radiant and quite therapeutic to create.

A Heart at the Centre

The starting point was a small, hand‑punched gold heart. I placed it in the centre of the cream cardstock and let it guide the rest of the piece. Around it, I painted simple marks in gold watercolour radiating outward like sunlight.

Love doesn’t have to be loud to be radiant.”

The idea was love as warmth, light and as something that reaches beyond us.

The Beauty of Using What’s Already Here

There’s a particular kind of satisfaction that comes from making something beautiful out of materials you already own. It feels resourceful, sustainable, and creatively freeing. Instead of buying new supplies, I let the limitations shape the design.

The recycled cardstock I used for the backing, one dark brown, one muted red, added a grounded, earthy feel. The combination kept the design gender neutral and suitable for anyone. Love isn’t only romantic, and Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be either.

The finished cards are clean, warm, and quietly expressive. And because the marks are painted by hand, each one is slightly different, a small reminder that love never looks exactly the same twice.

A Small Batch for the Shop

I’ve added a small batch of the hand-painted versions to the shop. Each one is made individually, with its own subtle variations in brush marks and gold shimmer.

They’re perfect for partners, friends, family, or anyone who brings a little light into your life.

A Quiet Closing

This little experiment reminded me that creativity doesn’t always need to be grand or complex. Sometimes the most meaningful pieces come from restraint, from choosing one symbol, one colour, one feeling, and letting it radiate outward.

Whether you’re crafting, gifting, or simply observing the season, I hope you find a moment of warmth and simplicity too.
