I Didn't Fully Get What My Mom Did for Me. Until I Became a Mum

Let’s be honest. Growing up, most of us think we understand what our mums do for us. We say "thanks" on Mother’s Day, maybe grab a card and some flowers and call it good.

But if you’re anything like me, you don’t truly realize what being a mum means until you actually become a parent.

The "Aha" Moment

When I had my son, I remember sitting there, completely exhausted, stretching out the last nugget of energy to hold this tiny person, who depended on me for everything. I was unprepared for all the emotions that came with this great, polarising responsibility of becoming a parent. I also realised that even though I thought I knew a lot, I didn't really know what I was doing. I just had to figure it out.

And out of nowhere, it hit me:

This is what my Mum did for me. Every. Single. Day. She figured it out and adapted along the way. And she made it look so easy.

The Stuff I Took for Granted

Looking back, there are so many things I didn’t fully appreciate until now:

  • The sleepless nights. An unspoken new dimension of exhaustion.
  • The constant worrying. From scraped knees to heartbreaks, she was always there.
  • The sacrifices. She probably gave me the last piece of cake more times than I’ll ever know.
  • The patience. Because let’s be real, I was not an easy child (sorry, Mum).

Now, as I go through each stage of parenthood, I appreciate her multi-tasking and tenacity even more. These qualities and abilities can lead to Mums being seen as real life superheroes.

So What Do You Say to a Superhero?

If you’re wondering what to give your mom this Mother’s Day, you can start with your words. Because she probably just wants to hear that you see her and appreciate her.

A thoughtful Mother’s Day card can go a long way — especially if you take a minute to actually write what’s in your heart (yes, beyond "Love you, Mom!").

If you’re not sure what to write, here are a few ideas:

  • "I never realized how much you did for me until I walked in your shoes. Thank you for everything, Mum."
  • "Now that I’m a mum, I understand all the sacrifices you made. You’re my hero."
  • "Thank you for loving me through every phase, even the difficult ones. I appreciate you more than words can say."
